We’re working on a new kind of theme for Textpattern: a special one for all new clean installations providing a simple splash page with all needed “revisit after” headers for search engine bots but keeping webdesigners safe to develop their new theme.

Here is a (static) demo: click here.

You’ll find this on the dedicated Github page here: https://github.com/cara-tm/wait-me.

The latest version 2.7 of the «Simplr » theme is available immediately for download as a zipped file:

With this new version, you never need to create some supplementary folders: all the CSS files are served from the theme directory. «Simplr » is simple as never before. 😋

You do not need required plugins except for the contact page (https://github.com/textpattern/com_connect); optional plugins are: smd_thumbnail (if you want to enjoy the responsives image process) and pat_speeder (if you want to speed up your website).

Here is a screenshot of the needed profiles created for the smd_thumbnail plugin:

The smd_thumbnail profiles for this theme.

Please, note: the «social_share » profile allows you to upload a different image for your social marketing (optional, only displayed within the social networks but invisible from your website). 😀

Keep an eye within the «config » form: all the Textpattern variables are located here in order to pilot your theme. 🚀 🤘

More config entries for more choices

With the help of the cutting edge new <txp:evaluate /> tag and its features introduced by Oleg —Core Dev— the upcoming new 2.7 version allows you to choose which social network to display into the share modal box: no more constraints!

Moreover! You can choose to remove completly the social link by simply replacing the social network names by 2 spaces:

<txp:variable name="social" value="⋅⋅" />

Behind the scene, here is what’s involved: 🤘

<txp:evaluate query='contains("<txp:variable name="social" />", "twitter")'>Twitter icon and social share process</txp:evaluate>

A Day/Night mode had been introduiced within the “Simplr” theme: you can choose to display it or not (from the config form, too).

Testing no javascript

As recommended by the web industry, the “Simplr” theme for Textpattern CMS works fine even if javascript is disabled from the user’s browser. Please keep in mind about some limited fallbacks:

  • The images aren’t shown into Lightboxes but openned into a new window;
  • Custom fonts will be served from the Google API instead (with some latencies due to 2 requests in 2 different domains: the default process by Google);
  • The Modal Boxes can be closed only by clicking the cross icon from inside its;
  • No beautiful, colored & animated custom tooltips but the default ones instead;
  • The “Go Top” icon will be always shown and will go straight to the document’s body anchor without any animation or will keep advantage of the “smooth scroll” feature within modern implemented browsers;
  • No thin and beautiful vertical scroll bar near the main navigation menu but the default browser one instead (only if its content exceed the viewport height);
  • No copy into the clipboard for the permalinks (no fallbacks, sorry but all permalinks are available from the browser’s address bar 😋).

Please, try yourself 👍.

Introducing the config file

The upcoming v 2.7 (available immediatly from the theme files list; see: package page) introduces a “config” form allowing you to easily set all your theme preferences: blog pages, list of pages not showing within the main navigation, pages to reject from the “BreadCrumbList” object into the JSON-LD, pages rejected from sharings, showing or not the animated spinner waiting to pages load, etc.

Preparing the new 2.7 version shipping

We have restored the limited number of icons for desktop browsers within the share modal box onto the main page. We made so much improvements for the new version we can’nt list them all here (CSS rendering, better XML RSS & JSON-Feed).

The only thing we can’nt achieve the best way is the new integration feature for flat script from files stored into our TXP forms despite all our tests and all our efforts… So, may be we keep all as this.

Stay tuned.

SEO help for images

Permalink - Posted on 2019-03-14 07:00, modified on 2019-04-09 18:00

To improve your SEO efforts, the “Simplr” theme v2.7 introduce an highlighting images with missing alt attribute by surrounding such pictures by a large dashed red border.

We achieve that feature with a simple CSS rule:

html img:not([alt]) { outline: 4px dashed red; }

and with a test into image tags to render the alt attribute only if it contains some text:

<img src="..." <txp:evaluate test='<txp:image_info type="alt" />'><txp:else />alt="<txp:image_info type='alt' />"</txp:evaluate> />

Never forget to add a full stop at the end of your alternative textes to indicate screen readers can make a short pause (see: Web Accessibility Guide).

Some image effects corrected

Permalink - Posted on 2019-03-11 09:42, modified on 2019-03-27 21:31

The upcoming latest version 2.7 restores the halftone and the saturated colors effects on images.
This version make intensively use of the Shortcode introduced with Textpattern 4.7.0. based on our study of the “Future Imperfect“ a theme integration from a free Template by HTML5 Up provided by Oleg, Core Dev.

The continuous development of this theme and its improvements gave me an idea: the design of an another version of the “Simplr” theme with a new visual. Stay tuned! 👋🏼
